Cardiff Man Charged With Four Terrorism Offences - Updated - Cardiff Woman Charged

This is an update in connection with an ongoing investigation by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit and Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit.

A 36 year old woman from Cardiff was yesterday (Friday, August 25) charged with one offence contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act - Dissemination of Terrorist Materials following her arrest on Tuesday, July 18.

She will appear before Westminster Magistrates on Tuesday, August 29.

A 34 year old man from Cardiff was charged on Wednesday, July 19 with four offences under Section 2 of the Terrorism Act.

A 34 year old man from South Wales will appear before Westminster Magistrates tomorrow (Thursday, July 20) charged with 4 terrorism offences.

Sajid Idris from Cardiff has been charged with 4 offences contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Idris was arrested by officers from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit (NE CTU) and Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU) on Tuesday July 18, 2017 following a joint, intelligence led investigation.

A 36 year old woman arrested yesterday has been released on bail.

Detective Superintendent Lee Porter from WECTU said “Cardiff is an extremely safe city. The community in Cardiff have repeatedly rejected the extreme views of individuals, calmly and with dignity. Their support is of great value and should not be underestimated

“Welsh police forces continue to work closely with their partners and communities to reassure local people and protect the public.

“Extremism and radicalisation is something that we continue to be constantly vigilant about.

“Nobody is better placed to detect something that is out of place in their communities than the people living in them. To effectively combat the terrorism threat the police, businesses, government and the general public need to work together.

Officers from North East CTU and WECTU have today (Tuesday, July 18) arrested two people on suspicion of offences under Section 2 of the Terrorism Act – Dissemination of Terrorist Publications as part of a joint intelligence led investigation.

A 34 year old man and a 36 year old woman from Cardiff have been taken to a local police station for questioning.

Searches at three properties in Cardiff have been carried out.

Today marks the culmination of three weeks of concerted joint working by NE CTU and WECTU.

During this time 8 people have been arrested for a variety of offences including under Terrorism Act, Proceeds of Crime, Immigration Act, Serious Crime Act and Fraud Act;

A 34 year old man from Cardiff was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act on July 6, 2017.

A 36 year old man from Barry was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Fraud Act and the Serious Crime Act on July 7, 2017.

Both men have been released under investigation.

 

A 29 year old man from Bridgend was arrested on July 11 on suspicion of offences under the Fraud Act and for Immigration offences.

A 37 year old man from London was arrested on July 11 on suspicion of offences under the Fraud Act and for Immigration offences.

A 29 year old man from Cardiff was arrested on July 11 on suspicion of offences under the Fraud Act and for Immigration offences.

All 3 men have been bailed.

A 32 year old man from Cardiff was arrested on July 13 on suspicion of offences under the Fraud Act. He has been released under investigation.
