Charges Follow Arrests in Northallerton

Two 14 year old boys from Northallerton have been charged following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

The boys were arrested on Saturday October 28 as part of an intelligence led investigation, supported by North Yorkshire Police.

They were charged this afternoon (Wednesday November 1, 2017).

[A] is charged with Conspiracy to Murder and Aggravated Burglary

[B] is charged with Conspiracy to Murder

They have been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court tomorrow (Thursday November 2, 2017).

DCC Lisa Winward of North Yorkshire Police, said:

“We wholeheartedly understand the concerns shared by the communities in Northallerton and the wider area of North Yorkshire. 

“However we would like to reassure the public that local officers are committed to ensuring the public remain safe, and are working hard to reassure those communities who have been affected.”

Stuart Carlton, Director of Children and Young People’s Services at North Yorkshire County Council, said; “We fully recognise that there are concerns as a result of this investigation.  We are working with the police to provide reassurance to the local community, and in particular to the young people, parents and staff connected with this case and we will continue to provide support with our partners.”

Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East have this morning (Monday October 30, 2017) been granted a warrant of further detention for two 14 year olds from Northallerton, who were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences on Saturday.

Their detention is now authorised until Wednesday November 1, 2017 and the boys remain in West Yorkshire for questioning.

Both boys were arrested as part of an ongoing police led investigation on Saturday October 28, on suspicion of Preparing for an Act of Terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Since the weekend searches have taken place at a number of locations in the Northallerton area. These include searches at three residential properties, which have now concluded.

Assistant Chief Constable Phil Cain, of North Yorkshire Police, said:

“North Yorkshire Police are supporting officers from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit with their investigation and searches.

“Officers believe that this is an isolated incident and the wider community are not at risk.

“We appreciate the cooperation of local residents whilst the investigation continues.”

On Saturday October 28, officers arrested two 14 year old boys from Northallerton on suspicion of preparing for an act of terrorism under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

They been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning.

Searches are ongoing at a number of properties in North Yorkshire.
